Waterproof pad, mattress protector, or waterproof sheet: what is the difference?

Waterproof pads for babies

In the baby textile category, the terms waterproof pad, mattress protector, and waterproof sheet sometimes overlap. Therefore, do not look for the difference solely in the name, but primarily in the size, purpose, material, and method of attachment.

Quick answer: a pad protects a smaller area and is portable; a protector covers the mattress and is attached to it; a waterproof sheet is shaped like a fitted sheet but also contains a protective layer.

What do the individual names refer to?

  • —Waterproof pad – a separate piece without corners intended to wrap around the mattress. A smaller format, for example, 45 × 80 cm, protects a selected area during diaper changes or on the go, depending on the manufacturer's intended use.
  • —Mattress protector – a protective layer placed between the mattress and a regular sheet. It can be attached with elastic bands at the corners or a hem. Not every protector is waterproof, so check the description.
  • —Waterproof sheet – protection in the shape of a fitted sheet that stretches over the mattress. It usually protects the entire top surface and stays in place thanks to the hem. Some stores also label it as a protector.

Which product should you choose?

For local and portable protection, a baby waterproof pad is practical. If you want to protect a 60 × 120 cm mattress during daily use, choose a protector or a waterproof sheet in the corresponding size. For fitted models, also verify the height of the mattress. Whether the product should be under a regular sheet or can serve as the top layer is determined by the manufacturer's instructions.

  • attachment method: without elastic bands, corner elastic bands, or a fitted hem;
  • composition of both the top and the waterproof layer;
  • instructions for washing, drying, and placement on the mattress.
